Does Buying Organic Coffee Really Matter?

May 02, 2022

If you’ve been following me online, you will know that I often recommend buying organic fruits and vegetables when possible. But what about your coffee? Is it worth it to invest in an organic option? After all, it is something that most of us consistently consume as part of our daily routine.

The answer is YES.

Food and health experts have invested an enormous amount of time and resources into sourcing the best and most natural coffee beans. Why would someone go to such lengths?

  • Coffee contains some of the highest amounts of pesticide residue.
  • Coffee is often found to hold significant levels of mold.

Therefore, a priority of ours is buying organic coffee whenever possible. It can be challenging to find this option in a drive through so we usually make our own at home. We prefer to source our favourite local coffee and there are a lot of local companies roasting the beans themselves.

In a lot of these countries in Central and South America farmers are paid very little so it’s important for us to support fair trade when it comes to our coffee purchases. This is often indicated with a label so you can be sure you are supporting local farmers.

Some of my favourite local roasters that have organic beans and support fair trade are:

  • Just Us from Wolfville
  • Sunday Silence from Mahone Bay
  • Cortado in West Bedford
  • Java Blend in Halifax also has some options

One of my favourite ways to consume coffee is in the “Bulletproof” style which I describe in the video above. This is a means of consuming some calories but by avoiding carbohydrates and the resulting insulin surge, it can help your body ease into intermittent fasting. This is a strategy I employ 3-4 mornings a week to help with insulin resistance and I also find it improves my mental clarity.

You can read more about it here in my Intermittent Fasting blog post. You can also find the Bulletproof recipe here.
