4 Reasons Why You Should Make Your Own Salad Dressing
Jul 31, 2022
It's easy to forget that most condiments we buy from the grocery store are actually hidden sources of "junky" ingredients. You can be a salad-eating machine and wonder why you still have symptoms related to inflammation or not reaching your health goals.
By making your own salad dressing, you can actually make a profound impact on your diet. Believe it or not, it's one of the simplest things to make at home and have on hand. All you need are some basics like a quality olive oil and a couple of go-to recipes.
Here is what will happen if you make the switch:
- you can avoid ultra-processed and refined oils that promote inflammation
- you can reduce the amount of sugar you are consuming
- you can lower the amount of added sodium you consume per day
- you can stay clear of artificial ingredients and/or flavors
You might be thinking that because you already buy "all-natural" or "fat-free" dressing you are in the clear. Unfortunately, you still aren't giving your body the best it deserves. These choices may reduce fat consumption but here is a problem: the vitamins you should be absorbing from the veggies in your salad are fat soluble. (So you actually need to consume fat to absorb these nutrients). Store-bought salad dressings use refined vegetable oils even when they claim to be "heart healthy" or "all natural". Making your own salad dressing means you can control the quality and freshness of the ingredients you are using.
The best part of this health hack is that it's a really easy way to ensure you are getting enough healthy fats into your diet. If you don't remember HOW important this is or why, I recommend you read the blog post I wrote titled Why You Don't Need to Be Afraid of Eating Healthy Fats.
I love to prepare food for my family and friends. Because of my busy lifestyle, I've had to learn how to keep things simple and quick while ensuring that our meals are nutritious and made from whole foods. Our current family favourite is Lemon vinaigrette which turns a head of local romaine lettuce or a bunch of grilled asparagus into a refreshing side dish.
