What is a Greens Product and What Does It Do?

What is a greens product?
Greens product are essentially freeze-dried vegetables and fruits, and healthy compounds that many of us never eat. These are nutrient-rich foods like spirulina, blue-green algae, green tea extract, wheatgrass, barley grass and chlorella.
They often contain vegetable blends that contain freeze-dried versions of broccoli, spinach and other vegetable sources (everyone eats enough of these right?!). They also contain fiber and some products contain different types of probiotics.
The biggest benefit for using a greens mixture is the immediate addition of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that are found in these "green" compounds. One scoop of our favourite product contains the antioxidant power of 15 servings of fruits and vegetable. It also does all this for 60 calories and 4g of net carbs (so it's great for low carb and ketogenic diets).
Most of us do not consume enough green foods in the course of our day to provide the nutrition or antioxidant support that our bodies need to function at the highest level possible. I use a greens product almost daily because it adds more nutritional value and it ensures that I have met a minimum amount of these healthy compounds for me to maintain an optimal state of health.
What greens product do you recommend?
We have tried many different greens products and I haven't loved all of them equally (some do taste terrible!). However, there are a few products and brands that have consistently provided great tasting products that even my kids enjoy like Greens First.
What are other benefits of taking greens products?
The other benefit of taking a greens product is that they are alkaline forming. Alkaline foods can help fight free-radical damage and inflammation, and support healthy cellular regeneration.
I certainly know that my immune system has been extremely powerful and strong over the last 17 years (as I have not had a sick day in all of my years in practice) and adding a greens drink is something I do almost daily.
How do you add greens product into your diet?
One of the easiest way to add greens into your day is to do it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Or, if you're fasting, have it be the first thing you consume when you are done breaking your fast.
I have found if you add ice cubes and cold water, it often doesn't need anything else with it. Sometimes the addition of a vanilla flavoured protein powder makes a really quick and easy post-workout shake or a healthy snack when you need something quick.
Some products also add cocoa and/or chocolate bean powder, so they are chocolate flavoured greens. There are a few of these products that taste so good that my kids will consume them regularly!
Also, try mixing hot water, chocolate flavoured protein powder and chocolate greens to make an excellent 'hot chocolate'!
If you want to add more antioxidants into your diet, this is an easy option and can make a big difference over the course of time if you can turn it into a habit. Try it for 30 days. You won't be disappointed!
