What Is the First Step to Achieving Long-term Health or Longevity?

The first thing that I always emphasize to my patients is the importance of having the right mindset. It’s basically impossible to create great long-term health if we don’t have an awareness of how our daily habits and decisions can compound overtime.

A great way to explain the idea of compounding is with finances and more specifically RRSP’s. It is well known that the longer you leave your money in an RRSP, the more money you will have when you retire due to compound interest. It also means that if you start early and contribute consistently, your overall investment will be much less than if you wait until later in life to start saving when time is no longer on your side. 

Did you know that the idea of compounding can apply to your long-term health as well?

Well, it does, but if you are like most people, you struggle with this concept. 

After taking care of thousands of patients, I have discovered that most people do not think about what their health will look like in 10, 20 or 30 years. In fact, the majority of people will not be concerned about the impact that their not-so-healthy choices will have on their overall health until they are faced with an actual disease or are unable to continue enjoying the life they have created for themselves.  

Then there are those of you who are already taking on new healthy habits like exercising or a new eating strategy, but are looking for immediate results.

It is important for you to remember that compounding takes time and although I wish there was one, there is no magic pill. It is also important for you to remember that lifestyle changes should not be complicated or overwhelming so that you are able to perform them consistently.

And what do we need to do daily in order to create that long term picture of health?

If you don’t already have a clear picture of what you want your long-term health to look like, this is where you start. Next, it is important to determine the types of things you need to focus on in order to achieve your health goals.
