Why Good Habits Matter

Jan 09, 2022

So here we are, a few weeks into January and you are likely finding yourself in 1 of 3 situations when it comes to your health goals.

  1. Feeling bummed about the current environment and lacking motivation to take care of your health
  2. You started off well but are already losing focus
  3. You are focused and kicking butt so far

If you are #3 great job and keep going!  Do you have a plan for how to keep that momentum going?

If you are #2, hang in there.  I have some tools and a plan to help you out.

If you are #1, let me be honest for a minute.  First of all,  I totally get it.  A lot of people have pandemic fatigue and have lost the internal motivation to start anything new or to even care about your health goals. This may or may not help, but I would encourage you to think about what you want your health to look like in 20 or even 30 years.

Currently, 70-80% North Americans are going to end up with one of the “big 4” chronic diseases: heart disease, cancer, diabetes or neurodegenerative diseases.  These statistics will forever trump the current pandemic issues and for the most part are lifestyle related and controllable. My hope is to help people control the things they can (like their choices, habits and lifestyle) and learn to cope with the things that they cannot (the pandemic, the rules, society, etc).  Most people do not link their current health routines and habits with their future health and this is a BIG mistake.

My message is simple: If you want to be healthy in the future you MUST create healthy habits now!!

In my experience taking care of thousands of people, I can easily think of 2 emotions that stop people from moving forward.

#1 Overwhelm

It is easy to get overwhelmed.  There is an abundance of information out there (I know because I read most of it)!  It’s also hard to know who to trust or who to believe.  “Science” is not black and white, nor is the body.  There is no “one-size-fits-all” when it comes to your health.  You have to figure out what combinations work the best for you.

#2 Frustration

We start, then we stop.  We’re “good” then we’re “bad.”  We lose 5 and gain 10.  Sound familiar?  Who wouldn’t be frustrated?

The solution… you need to rewire your brain and here are the elements needed in order to succeed:

1. Create clarity 1st - get into the right mindset by really spending time uncovering your WHY.

2. Plan out a step by step approach to adding in new habits and getting rid of the bad ones.

3. Find an accountability partner.

4. Accept that it isn’t going to be perfect 100% of the time and always be kind to yourself.
